CZECH NATIONAL ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSED THE ENERGY UNION IN THE CONTEXT OF THE PRIORITY AREA

The Czech coordination hosted a national round table on the topic of the Danube Region and the developments in the energy field. The debate took place on Thursday, April 9, 2015 in Prague and focused on the challenges of the Danube Region in the context of the currently presented Energy Union.

The roundtable, held in Hrzánský Palace, organized by the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, was attended by over thirty representatives of government bodies, social partners, NGOs, academia and business. The debate was based on two studies: ‘Natural Gas Reverse Flows in the Danube Strategy Region – Current State and Outlook’ and ‘Potential for integration of gas markets in the Danube Region: Case study of Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia’. Assignment of both studies has been approved by the 8th Steering Group Meeting of the Priority Area 2 in July 2014 in Prague.  Apart from the studies, also the peer-review of the studies by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic has been presented.

The Czech State Secretary for European Affairs Mr. Tomáš Prouza highlighted in his opening remarks the importance of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. According to Mr. Prouza, the EU Strategy for the Danube Region is important especially for its outreach beyond the borders of the European Union. Furthermore he appraised the Priority Area 2 as example of functioning and relevant priority area.

The Czech national round table was the first step in the debate in the Danube Region on the future macroregional energy challenges and the Energy Union. The outcomes of the roundtable will be presented in the context of a macroregional debate in May 2015.
