FIRST PROJECT MEETING OF THE DARLINGE PROJECT HELD IN BUDAPEST
The first Project Meeting of the DARLINGe – Danube Region Leading Geothermal Energy – project was held in Budapest, Hungary on 23 January, 2017. The meeting was hosted by the Lead Partner of the project, the Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary. All project partners were represented at the event, altogether 57 people attended, including the representatives of the Energy Priority Area of the Danube Region Strategy.
The project was granted funding in the 1st call of the Danube Transnational Programme (DTP), with an overall budget of more than 2,5 million €, with 15 project partners – including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary – and 7 associate partners from Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The partners shall work together to improve energy security and efficiency in the Danube Region by promoting sustainable utilization of the existing, however still largely untapped deep geothermal resources in the heating sector. The project areas cover altogether about 92000 km2.
The specific objectives of the project are:
1. To increase the use of geothermal energy and help the penetration of energy efficient cascade systems and matching them with heat-markets (concept of ‘resource-parks’);
2. To establish a market-replicable tool-box consisting of 3 complementary modules for sustainable geothermal reservoir management (benchmark evaluation of current uses, decision tree to help developers, geological risk mitigation scheme);
3. To advance stakeholder cooperation (establishment of a Transnational Stakeholder Forum) to foster geothermal developments and to create a strong geothermal value chain.
As a main result the intensity of cooperation will increase and contribute to energy security and energy efficiency by increasing the use of geothermal energy in the heating sector, which will make the Region less dependent on imported fossil fuels, also respecting the environment.

The project is co-funded by European Union funds (ERDF, IPA) under Grant Agreement no DTP1-099-3.2.
